Fancy wheels |
Week 2 of the TrainerRoad (TR) AI training plan is complete. I think that the platform is working well for me; the ability to adjust things to take advantage of ingame events is welcome (I've been able to do the Zwift Camp events by swapping in the ZC workout for my Tuesday ride). I am doing well; workouts that were scary a week or so ago aren't that bad now. My FTP is probably understated, but I'm trusting the process.
Increasing my typical ride lengths to 3h a week (2x45 mins + 1x90 mins) has also been helpful. Seat time/comfort is coming up. I'm able to tackle the MANY Zwift routes at the 30-35 km length that were previously unreachable. The bonus xp from badges is welcome, of course, but it's also nice to kick over so many micro-goals.
Drops: After buying the Zwift disc wheel, I'm back down to only 300k drops. This is the least amount I've had in hand for several years, and I have some solid expenditures ahead of me. During my rides, I'm seeking solid kilometers to level up the Zwift Steel frame (currently working on rank 4 for +5% drops). Soon I'll be able to swap one or more TR workouts for some PacerBot time for bonus drops. Everything will add up.
I've spent a fair amount of time nerding out and min/max'ing plans for what to upgrade after the Steel bike. This was triggered by some analysis paralysis about whether I should buy the Zipp disc wheel set, which became available at lvl37, or if I should save them for the Specialized Tarmac SL8 frame at lvl40, or if I save all of them for upgrading the Tron. Obviously I decided to go for the wheels. They are the fastest wheelset in the game for flats and not a bad investment over the long haul.
My ultimate goal is to upgrade the Tron, but at my current riding rate that will take up to 2 years. Putting off starting on that bothers me, but I also want a 'good' frame to ride during the F500 this holiday season. I considered sticking with beginner frames to start the Tron upgrade progress sooner (and I still might) versus hitting a 'good' frame like the Canyon Aeroroad 2024 or Specialized SL8, but I still have several weeks before the Steel is max'd out and I can make a call then.
Lastly, goals: My F500 goal is to not just grind through it like last time. I want to complete the challenge in good form. Last time I set up long zone2 custom workouts and rode mostly solo - I'm hopeful that I can ride the F500 with a pacer bot and a big group. This would be far more fun and far more lucrative in terms of drops. As I type, I'm at the cusp of being able to hang with the 1.5 w/kg bot for an extended period of time. I think that with continued TR help, I might be able to hang with the 1.8 or even the 2.1 bot this winter. Doing so would greatly shorten the amount of time required for the challenge.
