The Wrap Up |
Two weeks to go. One more hard week then a taper and then a test. I'll pause a bit for Gencon nerdery and then I'll likely restart another TrainerRoad plan, and maybe set it for a shorter duration.
TrainerRoad has been interesting. I look at the plan several times a week and it's often sending adaptations as it tweaks the next ride or two. When the next week's rides get within the window it updates again. It feels like it's pretty frequent but when I pay attention to the specific changes, I'll notice that it's often wobbling between two workouts - one slightly harder, one slightly easier. So it's really finessing the min/max to find the best fit for you behind the scenes, and does a good job of it as long as you're honest with your RPE feedback after each ride.
I've had a couple of instances where I attempted to be smarter than the AI bot. Both times, I came away humbled. The scenario both times was this: I looked at the next workout and said "wow, I feel great I can do something harder." Then I replace the workout, and when I go to execute I find myself in over my head. Lesson learned - do what the coach is telling you.
I'll do a wrap up post at the end of the plan, but needless to say, I'm seeing the gains that I wanted to see, and after 10 short weeks I've regained a good bit of my depth.
